Many attend high school, but very little know what teachers go through..
Teachers go through a lot to keep their students focused and excited for upcoming assignments to keep their grades up.
Some methods teachers use to keep students engaged with their classes is to get a brief insight to who they are and how they can help them with their work. Other teachers use motivational words and phrases, or use calming music as a background noise to keep students focused.
“I relate with them a lot, so I try to always ask them about their life outside of my class and get to know them just as a person and outside of being a student,” said Bailey Aguilar, journalism teacher.
Lots of students are often scared of asking help from their teachers, or don’t even try asking them for help, which can negatively affect their grades. In some cases, teachers often use methods of being open and friendly to their class, that way students aren’t afraid to speak up and ask questions.
“I think if students are comfortable asking you questions and just chatting with you, that usually helps with relationships, too, so I try to be approachable and show them that I’m also just a person like them,” said Aguilar.
Teachers often struggle with managing so many classes in a day, and it can affect their personal life drastically. Teachers often have a planning period, wait until the day ends, or use other methods such as arriving early to work on their stuff while they have the freetime to do so.
“My plan is I just choose not to bring my computer home, I try to get to school a little bit earlier because I find that I am more productive in the mornings,” said Christine Hahn, family and consumer science teacher.
Managing her time and personal time as a teacher is hard, while teachers get a planning period, it’s never enough time to plan, and grade your work to give good feedback, said Hahn.
Even though teachers go through so much to keep their students engaged with their work, they find a way to feel accomplished for all the hard work they’ve done. Some teachers do so much for students that they make a lasting impression on their students, and gain their respect as a teacher.
“I do feel like I still push my students to try their best, and I think that I develop that respect and that I get that back because I am very understanding and patient as a teacher,” said Hahn.
