The cross country team is already proving to be at the top of their game this season, beating Heritage with nine of their boys crossing the finish line in The Eliminator race last Saturday before the first Heritage boy finished.

Becky Efurd, coach of both girls and boys cross country teams, was excited for the first race.

“The first race is a 5k and I think we are going to perform really well,” said Efurd.

Her predictions were correct, with junior Braden Sell coming in first over all. Sell’s time was 18:08 winning the race Having started off the season on the right foot, Sell is optimistic for the upcoming races.

“Our chances to win state will improve as the season continues, and I think the team will stick together and push each other to be better,” said Sell.

With a new school year, the cross country team got some new runners. Efurd was happy to say the new additions are showing some great potential.

“We got about 27 new girls and 50 new boys. They’re a good group with seven boys under a five-minute mile and five girls under a six- minute mile,” said Efurd.

Efurd looks forward to the season with the goal of winning state championships.

“Our boys won state last year and the girls have a really good chance this year,” said Efurd.

Sophomore Andrew Flister ran the race Saturday and was pleased with the outcome of the race as well.

“The race went good and the guys did great. We beat Heritage so that’s really good,” said Flister.

Flister is excited for the season and glad to have such great new runners.

“We got some new kids that are really good and we’re going to do great this season. I think we have about 10 total races so I’m excited,” said Flister.

Sophomore Laisha Troncoso enjoyed the race Saturday and is hopeful for this season.

“The Eliminator was fun. It has lost of hills, but I liked it. We’re trying to win state and with the new girls, I think we have a really good chance,” said Troncoso.
