Hurricane Irma, the strongest Atlantic storm to ever be recorded, reached the eastern Caribbean Sept. 6 with winds reaching the speed of 185 mph. With only two deaths so far, the hurricane, now at a category 5, is a threat to Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cuba. A state of emergency has been declared in Florida by Trump.

France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, explained that the damage in the French Caribbean was great. His emergency services are now focused on stabilizing and communicating with all the surrounding islands. They will have another crisis meeting to discuss the damage.

In the Virgin Islands, a place where hurricanes occur many times, Hurricane Irma has been described as unlike any other. Within 185 mph winds, many were stranded inside their homes simply hoping that their roof would not be blown off.

On Sept. 6, Trump tweeted that he will be “watching [the] Hurricane closely” as it is projected to reach Florida by Sunday, Sept. 10. The category 5 hurricane has sprung fear into many of the residents of Florida. Evacuation has begun days before the hurricane, due to the previous threat of Hurricane Harvey and its outcome. The entire state is preparing from food to bottles of water in hope of escaping this storm.
