Hurricane Irma raged over Florida, sending not only people seeking shelter but also their beloved pets.

Many people were forced to leave their pets at home and evacuate immediately, but some people were lucky to be able to take shelter with their pets. A few shelters allowed people to bring in their pets to wait out Irma with them.

Zoos and wildlife sanctuaries were forced to make a decision on whether to wait out the storm or stress the animals out for relocation.

In some cases pet owners just left their pets trapped in a backyard or tied to posts. Thankfully though there were rescuers out there who weren’t only saving people. Recently, rescuers have saved roughly 40 dogs and 2 cats. Authorities in south Florida say that they will pursue felony animal cruelty charges on the pets owners.

Some animal organizations are giving donations for the welfare of the animals. For example the Best Friends Animal society, but why not just make more pet friendly shelters so that way people can stay safe with their best friends? This way more animals wouldn’t be abandoned during terrible storms and owners can feel that they can take their animals with them. People can ask for help while animals can’t. Pets trust their owners to keep them safe and to love them back. So instead of doing something after a terrible disaster why not do something about it before.
