President Donald Trump wrote in a post on social media Nov. 20 that Democratic members of congress were performing “seditious behavior,” and called for these members to be “arrested and put on trial,” or even punished “by death.”
The president’s statements were in response to a video Democratic congress members and veterans created, calling for the military to refuse illegal orders, such as violating federal laws, which could be possibly mandated by Donald Trump’s administration.
These mandates would be “threats to our Constitution, from right here at home,” stated Elissa Slotkin, U.S. Senator, according to CNN. However, it isn’t specifically stated which orders given to military members would be considered illegal.
“Their words cannot be allowed to stand — we won’t have a country anymore!!! An example must be set,” stated Donald Trump, via Truth Social in response to the video created by Democratic congress members. Following the string of updates on the social media platform, Trump called the Democratic members “traitors,” and said they must be “locked up.”
Many of Trump’s supporters have shown support for the idea of the death penalty, one user on Truth Social, called for the Trump administration to “HANG THEM” as “GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!”
“This administration is pitting our uniformed military assistance and intelligence community professionals against American citizens. Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this constitution. The threats coming to our Constitution aren’t coming from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear. You can refuse illegal orders. You must refuse illegal orders,” stated Elissa Slotkin, U.S. Senator, according to NBC News. “No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our Constitution.”
