The Grammys, the most prestigious award show in America, have gradually fallen off the chart ever since the rise of BTS. Internationally acclaimed K-pop boy group BTS, has risen in fame and viewership, meanwhile the Grammys have been failing to keep up with said viewership and fame.

The Grammys, as of last year, noticed that they have been losing views. Historically during the Grammys, approximately 18.7 million viewers are watching, but with artists such as Drake, Ariana Grande, and Tyler the Creator getting snubbed by the recording academy of their well-deserved awards, things have changed. The group that had the most effect on fans and socials is no other than BTS, as they were snubbed by the Grammys since 2019.

In 2019, BTS was nominated for Best Recording Package for their Love Yourself: Tear album and did not win. In 2020, they weren’t nominated for any category but got to perform with Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Mason Ramsey for a few minutes. A year later, BTS was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their first ever English single, Dynamite, but did not win. Now in 2022, on April 3, BTS was nominated for the same category as last year with their second English single, Butter, and again did not win.

As of last year, ARMYs noticed that the Grammys have been using BTS’ fame and fandom for views. The category that BTS was nominated for was moved to the preshow of the award show, but their performance was in the main show as the second to last performance. This would indicate that the Grammys are taking advantage of BTS’ fame and ARMY for their needed viewership, instead of acknowledging BTS’ hard work in becoming the biggest boy group since their debut in 2013.

Moving forward, the Recording Academy should, at least, acknowledge BTS’  hard work and struggle in becoming the first Korean group to be nominated for a Grammy and stop using them and their fans for views. Although BTS seems to have come to terms with being snubbed at the Grammys every year, fans demand that the group be finally recognized, to make history as the first Korean boy band to earn a Grammy.

So, who really needs who?
