Typing away at the computers, screens softly glowing in the dark and calming environment of the newsroom, the Mountie Spectrum Newspaper editors work their hardest to create and reform designs, stories, and layouts in order to make the best newspaper for each print issue.
“As the editor, most of our responsibilities are editing stories for grammar and the quality of stories, and making sure there are clear angles on what they’re writing about,” said Kenady Enyart, the editor in chief. “We also try to help with interviews and photos.”
Although it’s a labor of love, working as an editor is not an easy task. Between creating designs for the front cover, building the layout for all the stories, creating ads for those who sponsor and editing the staff’s grammar and punctuation, all while writing their own stories are tasks that can only be accomplished by the most passionate journalists, that being our editors.
“The hardest part of being the editor is maintaining our own work while trying to keep everyone else on track,” said Enyart.
The editors work tirelessly during each print, with a few breaks to play Minecraft, to have the rough drafts revised to perfection. “I love editing the grammar mistakes and making it all make sense,” said Adelyn Wright, editor.
Through the past few years, the newspaper has been outstanding thanks to the hard work and dedication from the editors. “I like being able to ensure the paper can be of the highest quality, and even though I make mistakes, I enjoy getting to work with everyone and helping them,” said Enyart.
Every editor has a different reason as to why they joined the staff and became an editor. Some always wanted to, while for others it was a random decision.
“I saw Gilmore Girls and I wanted to be Rory Gilmore, so I made a decision in 8th grade to join the newspaper. I really like writing and being a journalist, it’s what I want to do,” Wright said.
Whatever the reason, the editors are a blessing to the news staff and have a big part in helping and creating the best quality newspaper.
Although important, the paper isn’t the only thing editors work on. There are also events to plan, social media posts to make, and fundraisers to build to gain money to be able print and distribute the paper. Just printing the paper costs around $550, so it’s important the staff and editors raise money in any way possible in order to keep the paper up and running. The editors work hard to not only ensure that the newspaper and stories are of the best quality, but also to see that the staff writers bond through events that are planned, like going to Crystal Bridges, after school hangouts, and holiday parties.
