In the wrestling room, the sound of shoes squeaking on the mat and athletes pushing through intense drills fills the air. In the classroom, students are engaged and ready to learn biology. Standing at the center of it all is Coach Willie Wright, a coach known not only for building strong wrestlers but also for shaping strong individuals.
Wright has built a reputation for his dedication to the sport and to his athletes. From early morning practices to late-night matches, he consistently shows inspiring energy and commitment. His philosophy is simple: hard work, discipline and respect will take athletes further than talent alone.
“Coach Wright is like my light in the darkness, he’s like my general, when he says to jump the first thing I ask is how high. When he speaks it’s like a learning opportunity every time, he’s who I wanna be when I grow up,” said Jackson Pierson, 11.
Wright both shapes the physicality of students with rigorous conditioning and excels at his job as a biology teacher.
“He’s an amazing coach, he inspires and pushes us to our limits,” said Merik Hunter. “He was also an amazing biology teacher.”
Being a California native and having moved to Arkansas in 2010, Willie Wright has been training and studying wrestling for 16 years. When he isn’t on the mat, he spends his free time traveling west, playing videogames and longboarding.
“I travel a whole lot during the summertime. My favorite spot to go is probably Maui, Hawaii. I go to California a whole lot. Most of my free time goes to some wrestling stuff – I study wrestling and watch it of course,” said Wright.
Over the years, Coach Wright has helped guide numerous wrestlers to success, but he measures his achievements differently. For him, the true victories come when his athletes grow in confidence, discipline and perseverance.
“Coach Wright is like a wagon and I’m tied behind the wagon. He’s going to drive no matter what and when I run behind the wagon, it makes me stronger,” said Trent Tiffin, 11.
With his passion for the sport and commitment to his athletes, Coach Wright continues to make a lasting impact. Whether on the mat or in everyday life, the lessons of commitment, hardwork and perseverance he teaches will stay with his wrestlers long after their final match.
“I think Coach Wright is a pretty good dude, he’s a pretty good coach too, he does a good job training up all the new kids and making us better,” said Andrew Valdez, 11.
